At present, Bolivia has the highest rate of vector and congenital transmission, and the old rural profile of the disease is changing rapidly into urban. Recent epidemiologic data indicates that all the capital cities of the 9 Bolivian departments still have new cases of Chagas disease in children under fifteen years. However, good news came from Bolivia: the Chagas control program has reduced importantly the rate of infection. We present a brief review on the Chagas disease literature concerning Bolivia and discuss the present problems and challenges in epidemiology, vector distribution, clinical management, congenital transmission and drug treatment.

Urban transmission of Chagas disease in Cochabamba, Bolivia.
Chagas disease is a major public health problem in Bolivia. In the city of Cochabamba, 58% of the population lives in peripheral urban districts ("popular zones") where the infection prevalence is extremely high. From 1995 to 1999, we studied the demographics of Chagas infections in children from five to 13 years old (n = 2218) from the South zone (SZ) and North zone (NZ) districts, which diffe...
متن کاملPrevalence of Chagas Disease in Latin-American Migrants Living in Europe: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
BACKGROUND Few studies have assessed the burden of Chagas disease in non-endemic countries and most of them are based on prevalence estimates from Latin American (LA) countries that likely differ from the prevalence in migrants living in Europe. The aim of this study was to systematically review the existing data informing current understanding of the prevalence of Chagas disease in LA migrants...
متن کاملAchievements and Challenges upon the Implementation of a Program for National Control of Congenital Chagas in Bolivia: Results 2004–2009
Bolivia is one of the most endemic countries for Chagas disease. Data of 2005 shows that incidence is around 1.09‰ inhabitants and seroprevalence in children under 15 ranged from 10% in urban areas to 40% in rural areas. In this article, we report results obtained during the implementation of the congenital Chagas program, one of the biggest casuistry in congenital Chagas disease, led by Nation...

Some medicinal plants are a potential source of new drugs, in order to improve the treatment of Chagas disease whose treatment is still a challenge. In this study, the in vitro anti-epimastigote activity of certain fractions of Achillea biebersteinii, A. millefolium, Satureja mutica and S. macrantha was evaluated. Diethyl ether fractions of Achillea species and acetone fractions of Satureja spe...
متن کاملCan wild Triatoma infestans foci in Bolivia jeopardize Chagas disease control efforts?
The expected success of Chagas disease control programs in the Southern Cone countries relied on the assumption that Triatoma infestans, the main domestic vector, did not maintain silvatic foci except in the Cochabamba valley in Bolivia. Recent fieldwork revealed that wild populations of this vector are much more widespread throughout Bolivia than previously thought. Therefore, it is important ...
